Austin is a popular tourist destination and is considered one of the fastest growing cities in the United States. The city is home to a number of large high tech companies such as Apple, Facebook, Google, and AMD.

A vibrant music scene based around Sixth Street and the Warehouse District is a major attraction for visitors to the city. More than 100 live music venues are located here and a long-running public television show, Austin City Limits, showcases the talent of local musicians.

In addition to its vibrant musical scene, Austin is also known for its eclectic restaurants. You can sample a wide range of cuisines from Texan staples like Hoover’s Cooking to James Beard Award-winning eateries like Diner Bar.

Nowhere else does food and booze mix quite as well as in the city of Austin. This is especially true of the late-night dining scene, where tipsy diners can seek out bars, ethnic joints and sceney restaurants all in search of something delicious to soak up their drink.

The city is also home to a variety of parks and green spaces, as well as a plethora of outdoor activities including miles of hiking trails, kayaking, canoeing and swimming. The Colorado River flows through the heart of the city, creating numerous recreational opportunities and ensuring that Austin remains a great place to live.

As with most places in Texas, a variety of cultures have shaped the history of the city and the county. The first settlers were Anglo-Americans who arrived in the area in the early 1800s and settled on land that was abundant in resources. The population of Austin gradually grew and became more diverse as a result.

By the 1850s a second wave of settlers arrived in the area from Germany, Ireland and Sweden. These newcomers were not as adventurous as the first group and settled on land that was more suited to their cultivation. The newcomers helped bring Austin into the era of industrialization and paved the way for further growth of the city.

In the 1870s a railroad connection was established and the population began to grow significantly. This allowed the city to become a trade center for a vast area. The population was made up of a mixture of German, Mexican, Irish and Swedish settlers along with an increasingly diverse black community.

Although Austin did not experience a lot of violence during the Civil War, there were some issues that were very difficult for the town. During the war, the city suffered from shortages of goods and the loss of many of its fighting men.

The City of Austin has an extensive collection of photographs from its past. These photographs are largely donated by citizens and are available through the Austin History Center.
